Status of Residence (visa)
A foreigner must obtain a residence status in order to live and work in Japan.
There are two main statuses of residence.
The first group of status of residences (e.g. ”business manager”, ”Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services”, ”Skilled labor”) is listed in Appendix 1 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. The second group of status of residences (e.g. ”Permanent resident”, ”Spouse or Child of Japanese National”) is listed in Appendix 2. Foreign nationals with statuses of residence listed in Appendix 1 may work within the scope of their status of residence. On the other hand, foreign nationals who have statuses of residence listed in Appendix 2 can do various jobs in the same way as Japanese people.

If your company would like to hire a foreigner, you need to confirm the status of residence of the foreigner who has applied for a job. If you check his/her residence card, you can easily confirm the status of residence currently held by the foreigner.
If the current status of residence of an applicant is such as ”Permanent resident”, ”Spouse or Child of Japanese National”, and ”Long term resident” listed in Appendix 2, there are no restrictions on employment due to educational background, specialty, or profession. On the other hand, if the current status of residence of an applicant is such as ”Student” listed in Appendix 1, you have to be careful when hiring the applicant by considering his/her educational background, specialty, or profession.
A foreigner who does not have a residence card may be a ”Temporary visitor” who stays in Japan for 90 days, 30 days, 15 days or period of less than 15 days. Please check his/her passport. In such a case, the foreigner seeking a job will need to apply for the Certificate of Eligibility and obtain a status of residence to work. At that time, it is necessary to clear conditions such as educational background, specialty and profession.
For foreigners who want to work for a Japanese company, whether or not they can work for that company will depend on statuses of residence currently held. It may be necessary to obtain a different appropriate status of residence. Please feel free to contact us.
Flow of obtaining residence status
1. Meeting
In order to check whether you have already obtained a residence card, your family structure, etc., we will have a meeting with you at the place you wish or by e-mail, telephone, video phone of LINE etc. The first consultation is free.
2. Notification about possible statuses of residence to be applied and documents to be submitted
Based on the results of the meeting, we will send you a list of possible statuses of residence that may be applied as well as necessary documents to be submitted at the filing of the application form. We will also send you our quotation.
3. Preparation of documents
If you understand the contents of the application and ask us to prepare the application, please contact us by phone or email. We will send you an invoice for the start-up fee. After confirming the payment, we will prepare the documents.
4. Preparation for application
We will contact you by phone or email, once application documents are ready. If you would like us to submit these documents to an office of the Immigration Bureau which exercises jurisdiction, please inform us. We will send you an invoice. After confirming the payment, we will submit the required documents to the office of the Immigration Bureau and send you a copy of the submitted documents.
If you would like to submit the required documents by yourself to the office of the Immigration Bureau, please inform us. We will send you an invoice. After confirming the payment, all prepared documents will be mailed to you.
5. Permission
As a result of the examination of the application documents, if you are granted a status of residence, you will receive a notification of permission from the office. If you wish, we will go to the office of the Immigration Bureau to receive the residence card etc. on your behalf.
